They're using it as a silly replacement for "yes".
Never heard of naming a kid Texas though
NeilJosephRyan•
Do people really name their kids "Hampshire"? That sounds like a r/tragedeigh
AmaraRavencroft•
It’s a typo (probably intentionally for humor). They’re using it to mean “yes.” This is not a typical usage.
So, in context, “yes” answers the question “is it socially acceptable to name your kid after a US state?” The states shaded with “yurt” are: Washington, Montana, Texas, Virginia, and Georgia, which can all be used as first names (Texas is a bit questionable/unusual for a name though).

This is supposed be to be a joke post and I think by Yurt they mean to say Yes in a goofy and funny sounding way.
It took me a second but the states highlighted in blue are Texas, Washington, Montana, Georgia and Virginia which are all states that you could reasonably name a child after.

As someone from Hampshire I find it hilarious that there are American children called Hampshire running around somewhere

"Hampshire" is the funniest part of this bit

I can't believe Indiana is listed as no.

Yurt is slang for 'yes', in Ireland at least.

I know this map is a joke because Utah is in red. I know several Dakota's, Virginia's, an Arizona, and a Montana. All of whom are from Utah.

Is Indiana Jones just chopped liver to you?
brokebackzac•
Note that most of the states in yellow or blue are named after people... actually, Texas is the only exception.

You’ll hear “yerp” or “yurr” instead of “yes” in some East Coast cities. Sometimes it means “What’s up?”. It’s a slang term that started in Philadelphia and Baltimore. It is sometimes spelled as “yurp”, so it’s just the OP trying to be funny in saying “yes”

“Yes” becomes “Yep” becomes “Yerp” becomes “Yurt”

The real question is, in what world is "Indiana" not an acceptable name but "Hampshire" is?

I knew multiple women growing up in the 90s named Florida. They were all black. For some reason it works but I cant imagine a white woman being named Florida.
Saddlebag043•
Looks like they were typing "yes" or "yup", but intentionally misspelled the word for humor's sake.
