It never occurred to me that someone might make that jump. I feel like British English is more formal than American, maybe I’m biased. Definitely a typo.

It's a typo. It was probably something along the lines of "We would like to take this opportunity to let you know..." but then it got edited down to make it more informal and easier to understand. "We want..." does sound a little too informal though, so I'd be checking to make sure this isn't a scam of some kind.
