Business days...

the_canaiving_rat
excuse my wording, but what the f*ck are they? I've heard that monday to friday are business days- but then what about 6 business days, do u just gloss over the weekend, or do you make saturday and sunday business days when their turn is up? Like for example: "honey i'll be gone for 8 business days, have fun!" how long are those 8 "business" days context: i am not native, yet i have a c1 level of education with a high vocab in english (including the term business days), but of some choice things i am just completely unaware of the meaning

You wouldn't say "I'll be gone for 8 business days". It's used for processes or tasks that will only occur when people are working - banks are open, people are in offices, postal deliveries are being made. If a delivery requires one day to pick up, one day to sort, and one day to deliver, that's three business days. If it were sent on Monday, it would be expected by Thursday. If it were sent on Friday, it would arrive on Tuesday - five calendar days later, but three business days, as the task would not move forward on Saturday and Sunday. These are usually expressed in a range, as different activities will proceed differently. "The parcel will arrive in 6-8 business days." "I can deliver a draft website layout in 3-4 business days."

In the UK, it means Monday to Friday, but excluding bank-holidays. It's also called "working days". Not Saturday or Sunday, or Christmas Day, or Good Friday, etc. Days that traditional businesses are "normally" open. Thus, "8 business days" might be 10 calendar days, or it might be about 16 calendar days over Xmas and New Year.

A business day is a day when companies are usually open for business, so any day except a weekend or public holiday. The concept only exists in a business context, so a person would never tell their spouse or romantic partner that they would be away for 8 business days. It's generally used for things like letting people know how soon they can expect a transaction to be processed. If the estimate is 6 business days, that's one week plus one day, assuming there are no public holidays during the relevant time period.

>but then what about 6 business days, do u just gloss over the weekend, or do you make saturday and sunday business days when their turn is up? 6 business days excludes the weekend. only Monday-Friday are business days. Monday-Thursday & Friday-Wednesday are both 4 business days. the weekends don't count. only the "business days."

FYI: tomorrow (Monday Jan 20) in the US is a holiday (MLK Day / Inauguration Day), so that would not be considered a business today.

An alternative term for "business days" is "working days". Does that make it easier to understand for you?

Usually (if not tied to a specific business that has posted different business days) it means Monday through Friday. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and major national holidays are excluded. Many businesses, such as banks, take additional holidays - so their business days would not include those. For example, January 20th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and many business are open (so a normal business day), but my bank is closed (so not a business day for them).

Days that aren't weekends or holidays. If it's currently Wednesday December 23rd. And I said something will happen in 5 business days. You'd count tomorrow the 24th. Skip the 25th (Christmas) and the weekend, so Monday the 28th would be the second business day. And the 5th business day would be Thursday December 31st. It's most often only used when talking about mail delivery to indicate that mail usually doesn't deliver on weekends and holidays so to skip those days when estimating delivery time.

No one says "I'll be gone for 5 business days." Business days is only for when you're interacting with a company, like if you order something and it says it will be delivered in 5 business days, it ignores Saturday and Sunday because those companies don't do any work on the weekends.

Business days means “it will take this many days of work to complete.” In the US that work will be done M-F, excluding observed holidays. Mostly it means “please don’t hand me something at 4:30pm on Friday and get mad when it is not done Monday morning.”

no one tells their wife they're going away in terms of business days. that's just weird.

Business days are standard working days: Monday - Friday. However, public holidays are not business days. So if someone says they'll be gone for 8 business days, it may be as many as 12 days (8 days plus two weekends), or more if there are any public holidays in that timespan.

It's simply days excluding weekends (or other days where businesses are not open). So if something takes 5 business days, it could take 7 days in reality.

There should be something equivalent in your local language for this. In mine at least, we have 2 definitions: - Business day: Mon to Fri, excluding any weekends. - Calendar day: The normal 7 days per week. So if you say "7 business days", it can be 9 calendar days or up to 11 calendar days, depending on when you start counting. Hope this helps.

Business days are usually understood to be Monday to Friday in Canada. So, 8 business days from today would be January 28 (day 8).

Business day is Monday through Friday. When you count business days you skip the weekend and major holidays.
