I personally don't like the word butcher. I oftentimes pronounce the u like the one in bucket. I guess that a common mistake foreign speaker do.

Biweekly is objectively a terrible word

It's hard to dissociate a word from its meaning.
For example, there are certain female names that English speakers (or at least Americans) generally dislike: Mildred, Gertrude, Brunhilda, Beulah, Olga, Hephzibah. But then if you meet a really lovely person with one of those names, you soon find yourself thinking much better of the name, and might even end up giving it to one of your kids. (I would have put Gretchen on the list too as a kid, but it's had some kind of renaissance! I don't know, maybe *Donnie Darko* caused it?)

Bologna and Colonel are my lifelong nemesis because they aren't anything close to making phonetic sense it makes me so angry.
I ALWAYS read them wrong and have to recorrect myself in my head because I'm trying to read phonetically.

"Addicting" instead of "addictive".

I pronounce the "u" in butcher and bucket the same way. For me (England) it's the same vowel as in up, under, gut, mud...
I'm not sure which accent would pronounce them differently.

I'll never accept the fact that gaol = jail

Bodacious. Sounds really cheesy to me.

This is ridiculous, but I can never remember that those creepy bugs are *beetles*, not *beatles*. I think I’ve seen *beatles* written so much more often than *beetles* that it’s stuck in my mind as the “right” spelling.

“Mirror”, and “rural”. Both sound absolutely atrocious.

I really dislike the word “molest”, it makes my skin crawl.
Unfortunately I’m learning Spanish where “molestar” is used quite a bit.

the word *opportunity* haunts me everytime I try to say it

There are more phrases that I can’t stand. I have had the phrase common sense weaponized against me too much when people just really wanted things their way.

Pronouncing the Us the same in butcher and bucket isn't a mistake. Most midlands and all northern English accents (and others that dont have the foot/strut split) pronounce them the same.
KevDevX•
Hyperbole, just because of the pronunciation... Just why?? 💔

Native speaker- I’m from Boston. Butcher and Bucket do have the same vowel for me at least.

"Definently" is how I spell "Definitely" before using spellcheck. The former just looks and sounds right, but what's worse is that autocorrect doesn't always fix it

It's "gotten" for me. Eww I hate that word. It is a perfectly correct word in certain circumstances, but it doesn't sound like it should be haha. It sounds like "gonna" rather than "going to". I feel like "gotten" is a redneck word for "gotting" or something, but that's not a real word.
letmeluciddream•
as someone who uses voice recognition as my whole job, i hate any words that end with the -cts sound because it’s so hard to make it sound distinct from other words ending in -x
ex. acts, facts, sects (the worst)

Sorry if I misunderstood OP, but you pronounce the U in Butcher and Bucket the same? It should be the same sound shouldn't it? 😅😊
Anything that isn't pronounced the way its spelled

I hate the word cache because it’s pronounced like cash, but I always want to pronounce it as cash-shay
VampyVs•
I dislike when words that can end in -ogue are ended with -og because they look unfinished to me. Ex: Dialogue as dialog, analogue as analog. I'm American and its the standard in American English. I think this is something I picked up from reading "above my age level" that was just never "corrected" in school.

Bureaucratic. I always mess up the spelling. There are so many vowels. Also hierarchical and heterogeneous for pronunciation and spelling.

I keep hearing ppl over-use "essentially". I just tune out if anyone goes off explaining shit starting with this word.

Its not a common mistake, it may be common but it is not a mistake. As a native English speaker, I pronounce the "u" in both bucket and butcher the same (and bus, but, bull etc.), as do many people. It is just a matter of what English accent you have.

LITERALLY ANYTHING THAT USES SION TION CION SIAN TIAN CIAN, SOFT C SOFT G AND CH AS SH.
I hate spelling inconsistencies.
I also for the record hate it when scientists get mad about people not understanding them after they used 12 17 letter words in a row to refer to something. My brother in Christ how the fuck do you think any of what you said is logical to them. Idc if it’s useful to you to use the Greek and Latin roots, this man who isn’t a scientist didn’t understand you after you used 8 roots in a row he hasn’t seen in 12 years please simplify for the love of everything. Technical English DOESNT HAVE TO BE HARD. If you’d just use common words and put them together like a normal logical human being it wouldn’t be. This is elitism, not specificity. There is no reason that you can’t use native English roots to explain a complex concept.

words with a strong QU sound, like "eloquent" and "loquacious". sounds like i'm hocking phlegm every time.
also, words that sound ugly even though their meaning is good or mundane. particularly, "pulchritude" to mean beautiful.

As a native Russian speaker, I personally hate the words 'queue' and 'smoothly.' The first one doesn't even make sense in terms of how it's spelled and how it's actually pronounced

As a native speaker I dislike the word rural. It is so hard to pronounce with an american accent.

Pleaded. It should be pled, and it is accepted as an alternative, but pleaded has become more accepted and I can’t stand to hear smart adult people say pleaded, because it sounds like a mistake to me and always will. So to put it mildly, I dislike pleaded.
wbenjamin13•
Many native speakers dislike the words “tasty” and “moist” although I’ve never really understood the aversion myself.
